Shui-chuen Lee

Brief introduction
Dr. Shui Chuen Lee, professor and a former director of The Graduate Institute of Philosophy of National Central University. He received his B.A. and M.Phil. in philosophy in The Chinese University of Hong Kong under the supervision of the renowned late contemporary Neo-Confucians Professors Tang Chun-I and Mou Tsung-san. He received his PhD. with the Graduate Institute of Philosophy, Southern Illinois University, USA. He had taught at various Universities, including Tunghai University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, National Central University. From 1998 onward, he is the chief investigator of a research group of the ELSI problem of human genome project and in order to promote the studies and research in bioethics in Taiwan, he organized a number of international conferences on bioethics. He is the founding member, board member, and president (2006-2008) of the Taiwan Bioethics Association. He has published six books Philosophical Explorations of Contemporary Neo-Confucianism (1993), Hume (1993), Confucian Bioethics (1999), Applied ethics and Modern Society (2006, co-author), Clinical Ethics Consultations: Theory and Practice (2008, co-author), Confucian Theory of the Sources of Moral Normativity (2014) in Chinese and more than hundred articles in journals and book chapters both in Chinese and English. He has edited a number of books in Chinese Philosophy, business ethics, environmental ethics as well as bioethics, including most recently the book The Family, Medical Decision-making, and Biotechnology: Critical Reflections on Asian Moral Perspectives, in the Asian Studies in Bioethics and the Philosophy of Medicine Series by Springer (2007).His main interest is in Contemporary Confucianism, Hume, Kant, bioethics and applied ethics.

Professor Lee received supports of more than ten research projects by the Ministry of Education and National Science Council, awards of best research and professor of National Central University, awards of best academic achievements in bioethics and medical ethics. He has been served as the vice president of the Chinese Professional Association of Bioethics and elected as vice president (since 2003) of the Asian Bioethics Association (2012-2014). He was invited as a board member of the International Board of Advisors of The Applied Ethics Program of Hokkaido University, PhD Thesis Advisor of the Medical Humanity Centre of Shantung University, and served on the boards of editors of a number renowned academic journals including The Legien Monthly, Philosophy and Medicine, Medical Ethics, Asian Reviews. He is now the editor-in-chief of the National Central University Journal of Humanities.
