The Animal Welfare Act in Malaysia: Synergising Ethico-Religious and Scientific Capacities
(Prof. Azizan Baharuddin)
Abstract:
An Animal Welfare Act is deemed of critical importance to Malaysia currently as it has been observed for example that the unethical use of animals in experimentation especially by and for foreign companies was a serious issue. Such a scenario needed to be addressed quickly and various agencies and bodies including the newly-formed National Bioethics Committee was called to provide their inputs/suggestions. Given the cultural background of the country the process leading to the final formulation of the Act which took several years was an interesting lesson in the need to synchronize the efforts of religious, scientific and policy groups in ensuring animal welfare in Malaysia.
